Education and agriculture : Hand in Hand
Forty-three technicians from the Ministry of National Education (MEN) are currently participating in a training course on the Pfumvudza agricultural technique.
The Mahamasina Atsimo Public Primary School in Antananarivo is hosting this event from June 30 to July 2, 2025. The session is organized through a collaboration between the MEN and the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MINAE). The objective of this training is to prepare these technicians to popularize the Pfumvudza method in 800 schools throughout Madagascar, according to the official press release. This is an essential step in integrating sustainable agriculture into national education.
Pfumvudza, a method originating from Zimbabwe and introduced in Madagascar in 2023, is based on small-scale cultivation with minimal water and inputs. This system improves agricultural yields while protecting the environment and addressing the challenges of malnutrition and food insecurity. Supervision is provided by MINAE specialists.
The modules include theoretical components and practical demonstrations. The opening ceremony was held in the presence of MINAE Secretary General Ramindo Gaetan, representing Minister Hajarison François Sergio. In his speech, a strong message was conveyed to the participants: “Together, let’s transform the agricultural sector.” Introducing this technique in schools allows for early awareness of modern and sustainable agricultural practices. This educational approach could improve living conditions in several communities across the country.
