Mauritius wants to reduce its food dependence with MoBeez
Mauritius currently produces only about 25% of the food consumed by its population.
To change this, the government has launched a new mobile application called MoBeez, as well as a support program for private veterinary services. The launch took place at the Rajiv Gandhi Science Centre in Bell Village. The Minister of Agro-Industry, Dr. Arvin Boolell, was present, along with several other government officials and representatives of the Small Farmers Welfare Fund (SFWF), the organization that supports small farmers.
MoBeez is an application designed to provide small farmers with important and useful information, quickly and easily. The Minister explained that in a world where the climate is changing, having the right information is very important for successful farming. Boolell also emphasized that technology can help make farming smarter and more efficient in Mauritius. The latter encouraged farmers to use these digital tools and to work with the authorities to produce better locally.
With this program, the government hopes to increase local agricultural production, reduce dependence on imports, and ensure better food security for the population.
According to Rochel, a farmer, “Thanks to the MoBeez app, we now have access to useful and easy-to-access information, which helps us better manage our crops and cope with climate change.” “This technology is a real opportunity for us, small farmers, to produce more and improve our daily work,” he added.
