Mali-USA: strengthening cooperation

This cooperation takes place within a complex regional context, marked by several competing international actors but also. Partnership with the United States offers Mali the resources and support needed to assert its sovereignty while accelerating reconstruction and development.

Strengthening Dialogue for Cooperation and Security

In August 2025, bilateral relations between Mali and the United States gained new momentum through a series of high-level diplomatic meetings. Mali’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Abdoulaye Diop, welcomed an American delegation led by Michael McCabe Jr., with the U.S. Ambassador to Mali also present, aiming to consolidate a constructive political dialogue. These discussions focused on several key areas, including security, the economy, and investments.

Security at the Heart of the Exchanges

Security cooperation is central to the concerns of both countries. Minister Abdoulaye Diop explained Mali’s strategic choices to secure its territory and restore national integrity, while emphasizing the need for lasting peace based on a national approach. The American authorities reaffirmed their support for Mali’s efforts, respecting national sovereignty and the interests of the Malian population.

In this context, the United States considers Mali an essential partner in stabilizing the Sahel region. The U.S. government aims to strengthen local capacities to combat terrorism, notably through access to satellite intelligence, military training, and operational support. The United States also plans to prevent the financing of terrorist groups via targeted banking measures.

A Partnership in a Changing Regional Context

These exchanges come as Mali has joined the Confederation of Sahel States (AES), a new geopolitical dynamic that the Americans are watching with interest. Both parties agreed to maintain pragmatic dialogue to enhance cooperation in common strategic areas, particularly counterterrorism efforts, while respecting Mali’s sovereign choices.

Economic and Health Opportunities

Cooperation between Mali and the United States also extends to economic and health sectors. The discussions covered investment opportunities to boost Mali’s economy and attract American investors. The upcoming establishment of an American Chamber of Commerce in Mali is expected to facilitate this economic collaboration.

In the health sector, the United States showed its commitment by supporting programs to fight diseases such as malaria, in partnership with Malian centers. This partnership aims to strengthen public health in the country, a priority area for renewed bilateral relations.

Perspectives and Future Commitments

This new phase of cooperation between Mali and the United States reflects the two countries’ desire to renew relations based on realism, pragmatism, and mutual interests. After several years of rupture, this revival is marked by regular diplomatic visits, renewed political dialogue, and a concrete U.S. commitment to support Mali in its efforts toward stability, security, and economic development.
