On July 23, 2025, Niger and Egypt took a significant step forward in strengthening their bilateral relations by signing a memorandum of understanding in Niamey. This signing marks the start of a regular political consultation mechanism between the two countries, aiming to build a solid strategic partnership based on peace, development, and security.
A structured political and diplomatic dialogue
The official visit of the Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Immigration, Dr. Badr Abdel-Atty, was warmly welcomed by Nigerien authorities. The discussions consolidated exchanges initiated in October 2024, with a clear will to establish a regular and structured political dialogue between Niamey and Cairo. This framework aims to coordinate positions on regional and international issues while reinforcing bilateral cooperation.
Economic cooperation and growing investments
In the same context, the first Egypt-Niger Economic Forum was inaugurated in Niamey. More than 30 Egyptian business leaders participated in this event to identify investment and partnership opportunities in key sectors such as agriculture, pharmaceuticals, infrastructure, mining, and renewable energy. The forum reflects a shared determination to intensify trade, exchanges, and investments between the two nations, demonstrating proactive economic diplomacy.
Security : A Major Dimension
Security cooperation is a cornerstone of this strengthened partnership. Egypt shared its notable experience in counter-terrorism, emphasizing the need for a comprehensive approach that includes security, education, and socio-economic development. Both countries committed to deepening their military and security collaboration, particularly to stabilize the region and promote lasting peace.
Perspectives
Beyond the political, economic, and security aspects, several concrete projects are underway, such as the establishment of a direct Niamey-Cairo flight line scheduled for this year, cultural cooperation through universities, and a joint agricultural farm. These initiatives illustrate the diversity and depth of relations between Egypt and Niger, expected to develop even further in the coming years.
