Under Adesina’s presidency since 2015, the AfDB has undergone a profound transformation, strengthening its role as a driver of African development and amplifying the voice of continent in global finance.

He emphasized the mobilization of African resources to foster the continent’s structural transformation, in line with the theme of these meetings: “Making the Most of Africa’s Capital for its Development.” Adesina also advocated for reforming the global financial architecture to mobilize more resources for Africa.

Despite progress, major challenges remain, including persistent poverty affecting approximately 700 million Africans, the impacts of climate change, and the need for economic diversification and strengthening financial resilience.

Farewells and perspectives

These meetings mark the end of an era with Adesina’s departure. He leaves a strengthened institution, but one facing a complex global environment marked by protectionist tensions and climate issues.

The election of his successor, from among five candidates, is a key moment that will determine the AfDB’s ability to continue its role as a catalyst for progress for Africa in a changing geopolitical and economic context. Adesina emphasized the need for the AfDB to remain agile, inclusive, and innovative in the face of future challenges.

In summary, Akinwumi Adesina bids farewell with a legacy of institutional transformation and the expansion of the AfDB’s role in African development, while calling for future challenges to be met with renewed leadership.
