Access to medicines: Madagascar and its partners in consultation

Population at the Center of Priorities

The price and distribution of medicines in Madagascar are a central concern for the authorities and their international partners.

On September 11, 2025, the Minister of Public Health, Professor Zely Arivelo Randriamanantany, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Rasata Rafaravavitafika, co-chaired a meeting with the French Embassy and the European Union Delegation.

The meeting focused on the increase in prices observed in several pharmacies and the supply difficulties. Government officials reiterated that health is a fundamental right and that access to medicines must remain guaranteed for the entire population.

The SALAMA Association played a central role in the discussions. Created in 1996 and under the supervision of the Ministry of Public Health, this non-profit organization ensures the supply of public hospitals and private non-profit institutions. SALAMA provides essential medicines and medical consumables at affordable prices.

The participants agreed to establish a monitoring and evaluation mechanism to improve distribution efficiency. “This approach aims to ensure the availability of medicines throughout the country and reduce shortages, which often affect remote areas,” said one official.

The French Embassy, the European Union, and technical and financial partners reaffirmed their commitment to the Malagasy authorities. According to one official, “this is renewed support to accompany the government’s efforts to sustainably improve access to medicines and strengthen the healthcare system.”
