Regulation and Innovation at the Heart of the Speech
The need to create an appropriate platform and regulatory framework for the use of artificial intelligence (AI) was the focus of the speech by Dr. Avinash Ramtohul, Minister of Information Technology, Communication and Innovation.
On August 19, 2025, he visited Anna Medical College in Montagne Blanche to address medical students, physicians, and healthcare workers.
The Minister explained that AI offers many opportunities, but its misuse can be dangerous. Biased data can produce discriminatory results. In some cases, the use of AI without clear regulations could even be unconstitutional. “Our ministry is working to put in place safeguards to protect citizens while promoting innovation,” he explained.
Dr. Ramtohul also warned of the risks of generative AI, which can create images or videos showing people in situations they have never experienced. This content can damage reputations and create social tensions. “Everything that happens in the virtual world has an impact on the real world,” he reiterated.
In the medical sector, the Minister announced that specific regulations for AI were being prepared. This official highlighted the advantages of this technology: digital assistants can help patients perform basic examinations or provide first-level medical assessments, such as the Babylon Health app.
“These innovations can improve the quality of care, complement the work of doctors, and ease the burden on medical staff,” he added, specifying that the first measures were already in place.
