Closure of the Plastic Odyssey stopover in Mamoudzou

Three Weeks of Plastic Pollution awareness

After three weeks of raising awareness about plastic pollution and nature conservation, the Mamoudzou Tourist Office is organizing the end of the Plastic Odyssey ship’s port of call on August 1, 2025.

This event, organized by Mayotte Nature Environnement (MNE) with the support of several partners, marks the conclusion of a mission dedicated to combating plastic pollution in Mayotte. From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., a program of free activities awaits the public.

Workshops to learn how to reduce and sort waste will be offered, along with games on bird song recognition. Virtual reality will allow visitors to learn about dugongs, while activities on sea turtles and a game about the white crab heron, Mayotte’s emblematic bird, will also be featured.

Two screenings of the documentary Plastic Odyssey are scheduled: the first at 10 a.m., aimed at children, the second at 1 p.m., for an adult audience, followed by moments of discussion with the ship’s crew.

Arriving in Mayotte on July 15, the Plastic Odyssey ship is part of a global expedition launched in 2022, aimed at finding concrete solutions to reduce plastic pollution, particularly through local recycling. During the stopover, several local associations such as Surfrider Mayotte and Les Naturalistes de Mayotte organized waste collections, particularly necessary after the recent storms that generated significant waste on the island.

Organizations such as CITEO and Habit’Âme handled the storage and recycling of the collected waste, respectively. According to the official press release, this closing day illustrates the collective mobilization of residents, associations, and institutions around environmental protection. This provides a moment of learning, sharing, and dialogue for everyone to better understand the issues related to plastic pollution.
