“Education must once again become a national priority,” stated President Azali Assoumani on Monday, June 30th at the People’s Palace in Moroni, during the official launch of the National Conference on the Transformation of Education.

This meeting marks the beginning of a vast project to fundamentally rethink the Comorian education system. Under the theme “Let’s Transform Our Education Together to Build an Emerging Nation by 2030,” nine thematic groups, led by national experts, have begun work aimed at proposing a new educational model adapted to the country’s needs. A summary of the discussions will be presented to the President at the closing ceremony scheduled for Wednesday.

The Head of State highlighted the challenges encountered, particularly the consequences of Cyclone Kenneth and the Covid-19 pandemic, which have severely impacted educational pathways. “We must make up for lost time and build our children’s educational future together,” he insisted, calling for a collective effort to improve the quality of education, strengthen civic values from early childhood, and review school curricula at all levels.

These meetings also have a strong civic dimension. The Minister of National Education, Bacar Mvoulana, reiterated the importance of the consultations conducted across the country, which gathered the views of teachers, students, parents, school principals, and religious leaders.

This approach aims to build a broad consensus for sustainable reform. Finally, the President of the National Assembly proposed the creation of a monitoring committee to ensure the effective implementation of the recommendations arising from these meetings.
