SMEs: driving 42% of Mauritian GDP

Collaboration and innovation at the heart of International MSME Day in Mauritius

Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) represent 42% of Mauritius’ Gross Domestic Product (GDP), said Ravin Rampersad, CEO of SME Mauritius Ltd. He was speaking at the “SME Insights” Forum held on June 27, 2025, at the SME Mauritius Complex, Coromandel.

This event brought together entrepreneurs, students, academics, and economic stakeholders to discuss the important role of MSMEs in the country’s development.

Every year, on June 27, International Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSME) Day celebrates their contribution to the world. This year, the theme was “Business for MSMEs – Connecting the Entrepreneurs.” In his speech, Rampersad also noted that this sector creates one in two jobs in Mauritius. This demonstrates how essential they are to the job market. The CEO praised the work of the thousands of entrepreneurs who innovate and show courage every day to move the economy forward.

The President also spoke of the importance of supporting project leaders with sound information, training, technology, and networks. For example, the Bootcamp program, in partnership with the University of Mascarene, helps young people learn how to prepare and present a business plan.

This program aims to encourage a strong entrepreneurial spirit among young people. The official added that since the public sector cannot create enough jobs, entrepreneurship is the solution for the future and for diversifying the economy. The “SME Insights” Forum helps young entrepreneurs gain the tools and confidence to succeed.
