Reconstruction and Development: The Priorities of the Mayor of Mamoudzou

On June 26, in Kawéni, Ambdilwahedou Soumaïla, Mayor of Mamoudzou, presented the New Urban Renewal Program (NPRU).

He explained that this program aims to improve life in the neighborhood through more than 320 projects, such as the construction of schools and sports facilities. The Mayor also spoke about the damage caused by Cyclone Chido in December 2024. The strength and solidarity of the residents were praised. “Despite the difficulties, we are rebuilding together for a better future,” he stated.

The Kawéni Youth and Culture Center welcomed numerous elected officials, residents, associations, and partners. During the day, participants learned about current projects, took part in site tours, and attended a job dating event. The highlight of the day was the symbolic laying of the foundation stone for the future municipal stadium. This stadium, with a capacity of 2,000, will be built starting in late 2025.

Architect Pierre-Henri Gomez explained that this stadium is a symbol of hope and unity. According to him, it is not a place designed to impress, but to welcome all residents. Furthermore, the Kawéni agricultural park continues to expand. Covering 12 hectares, this project promotes agroecology and trains young people in sustainable practices. More than 240 farmers have already been trained there.
