Ecological transition at the heart of the partnership
The President of the Réunion Region, Huguette Bello, met with Paul Bérenger, Deputy Prime Minister of Mauritius, in Port Louis.
These two leaders discussed the challenges facing their two sister islands and ways to strengthen their collaboration. At the heart of this exchange was the clear desire to jointly build the Indian Ocean as a space of peace, stability, and solidarity. Cooperation also aims to promote economic and social development for the benefit of the region’s populations. Several areas were discussed, including environmental protection, the marine economy, education, and culture.
This meeting took place on the same day as a major announcement: an agreement between Mauritius and the United Kingdom for the return of the Chagos Archipelago to Mauritius. Huguette Bello praised the determination and work of Paul Bérenger and the Mauritian government in achieving this success. This agreement is an important step for the Chagossian people, who will soon be able to return their lands.
