A new code to modernize and secure rural livestock farming

A Historic Step Toward Modernization

Livestock farming is a fundamental pillar of food security and a key driver of economic development in rural areas of the Comoros.

Yet, this sector faces numerous challenges related to the lack of a structured legal framework, the management of health constraints, and limited access to veterinary services and animal feed.

To address these issues, the Ministry of Agriculture, through the Directorate General of Livestock, organized a workshop at Le Retaj Hotel to update and validate the Livestock Code, in partnership with the Comoros Food Systems Resilience Project (FSRP). The objective is to adapt national regulations to the realities of the Comoros while complying with international standards.

“This code is not a simple administrative document, but a comprehensive strategic vision aimed at regulating, promoting, and professionalizing the sector,” explained Abdoul Kader Saadia, Secretary General of the Ministry. The Secretary General welcomed the involvement of national experts and international partners, notably the World Bank, in the development of this text.

Dr. Nahouza Mohamed Hassane, of the FSRP project, recalled that this initiative is part of a regional dynamic led by ECOWAS, with the aim of strengthening food security in the face of climate and health shocks.

This new legal framework, a first for the Comoros, marks a key step in structuring a sector that has long been managed informally, thus ensuring the sustainability of livestock farming and the well-being of rural communities.
