Smart Agriculture: Phase 3 Launched

Towards Sustainable Agriculture in Mauritius

On April 7, 2025, the Mauritius Chamber of Agriculture (MCA) officially launched Phase 3 of its “Smart Agriculture” initiative. A key project for the sustainability and resilience of the island’s agricultural sector.

This new phase focuses on agroecology and the adoption of sustainable agricultural practices. The objective is to address environmental challenges and strengthen food security in Mauritius.

During the launch ceremony, the Minister of Agro-Industry, Arvin Boolell, emphasized the importance of this project in reducing pesticide use, particularly on crops such as squash, which tend to absorb high amounts of chemicals. Boolell expressed his concerns about the potential impact of these substances on public health. He emphasized the need to adopt smart agricultural methods to protect consumer health and the environment.

This project represents a major step forward for sustainable agriculture in Mauritius. The latter will also integrate innovative technologies, such as blockchain, to ensure the traceability of agricultural products and ensure their quality from field to fork.

The Minister also emphasized the importance of involving young people in this sector, highlighting the growth potential of agriculture and the opportunities it offers for the country’s economic future.
