UN-Habitat trains local officials in the Comoros

On March 19 and 20, 78 prefectural and municipal officials from the Comoros participated in a training course on urban climate resilience, held at the headquarters of the former Les Arcades Hotel in Moroni.

This initiative, supported by UN-Habitat, is part of the “Building Urban Climate Resilience in Four Southeast African Countries” project, which includes Madagascar, Mozambique, Malawi, and the Comoros.

The training allowed participants to familiarize themselves with the Urban and Community Guide, a tool for addressing the climate challenges that threaten urban areas. Mohamed Abdou, Director of Regional Planning, and Hamidi Soulé Saandi, Local Governance Officer at UN-Habitat, led the sessions, highlighting five major issues related to climate change: heatwaves, cyclones, floods, etc. These increasingly frequent phenomena have direct repercussions on communities and urbanization.

Moinahedji Ibrahim, a participant and executive from the municipality of Domba, emphasized the relevance of the training, which addresses a worrying local reality. She expressed the hope that the knowledge acquired would be concretely applied to improve climate risk management and strengthen the resilience of urban infrastructure. Farid Mkavavo, Local Governance Delegate of Ngazidja, emphasized the importance of this training in strengthening the expertise of local officials and ultimately facilitating the issuance of building permits.
