Terminal C4 Boosts National Logistics
The modernization of the port of Toamasina, Madagascar’s main maritime hub, is progressing thanks to a $639 million investment.
Launched in 2018 with the support of the Japanese government through JICA, the Terminal C4 project is moving forward with the official handover, on March 21, of the first 333 meters of the quay.
Even though the terminal is not yet fully operational, this first phase already represents a major step forward for national logistics. This infrastructure increases the port’s capacity and helps reduce congestion. Ships spend less time waiting, while the flow of goods becomes faster and smoother.
The C4 quay is designed to accommodate large vessels, particularly super post-Panamax container ships. With a depth of up to 16 meters, this project allows Madagascar to reduce its reliance on foreign ports for transshipment. This lowers transportation costs and improves delivery times.
The economic benefits are already visible. This first phase facilitates the import of essential products such as food and energy resources. This project also strengthens the country’s export capacity. In parallel, this initiative helps increase foreign trade revenue and boost the logistics sector, thereby creating jobs.
During the official ceremony, the President of the Refoundation of the Republic of Madagascar, Colonel Randrianirina Michaël, emphasized the strategic importance of the port for the country’s development. He noted that Toamasina is the main gateway for goods entering and leaving Madagascar. The Head of State also affirmed that this modernization is essential to strengthening the country’s position in the Indian Ocean.
