WHO: $250,000 for victims of Cyclone Gezani

Four Regions Heavily Affected

The World Health Organization (WHO) has announced the release of $250,000 in emergency funds to help Madagascar after Cyclone Gezani.

This aid will be used to quickly purchase medicines, medical equipment, and other essential supplies for the affected populations.

According to the National Office for Risk and Disaster Management (BNGRC), 31 people lost their lives in the cyclone, including 29 in the Toamasina II district and 2 in Ambatondrazaka. Four people are still missing, and 36 others were seriously injured.

The cyclone struck four main regions: Atsinanana, Analamanga, Analanjirofo, and Alaotra Mangoro. These regions encompass 16 districts that were severely affected. In Toamasina, approximately 80% of the infrastructure was damaged. Many roads, schools, and homes have been destroyed or severely damaged.

In total, 250,406 people were affected by Cyclone Gezani, including 68,406 children. Approximately 6,870 households were displaced, including 1,743 children. To accommodate them, the authorities have established 28 shelters in the affected areas.

In response to this dire situation, a mobilization and fundraising campaign will soon be launched by the WHO in collaboration with the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). This program aims to strengthen coordination between humanitarian partners and international donors to ensure rapid and effective assistance.

The Malagasy authorities have already begun distributing food, drinking water, and hygiene kits, but the needs remain significant. The government is calling for national solidarity and continued support to help affected families rebuild their lives.
