A New Contract to Structure the Digital Sector
Reunion Island’s digital economy currently represents €1.4 billion in revenue.
The sector comprises 1,500 companies, 3,500 employees, and nearly 900 new hires each year. Digital technology plays a significant role in the island’s economic and social life, but it also faces challenges, particularly in protecting its infrastructure and ensuring data access.
To strengthen this sector, the Reunion Region signed its 2026-2028 digital sector contract this Wednesday, February 18th, at the MOCA in Saint-Denis. This new agreement follows the first contract signed in 2020, which had limited impact.
The signing brought together several key stakeholders, including Réunion THD, Digital Réunion, France Travail, and Solidarnum, an association that helps residents improve their digital skills. Indeed, 20% of Reunion Island’s population lacks digital literacy.
The contract includes plans to support 10,000 people in improving their use of digital tools, to create an international digital trade fair, and to develop an environmentally responsible digital strategy. The Region also aims to strengthen the link between research, innovation, and the economy by encouraging joint commitments among the various stakeholders.
Another important point concerns infrastructure. Normane Omarjee, President of Réunion THD, reiterated the urgent need to build a new submarine cable to secure data access. The existing cable, Safe, is aging, and the project, partly funded by European grants, still needs €6.5 million to be completed.
