Kap Photovoltaics: Reunion Island accelerates solar energy

Reunion Island Reaches 6,000 Installations Per Year

The Reunion Island Region has launched the Kap Photovoltaic program. This program has enabled the island to increase its number of photovoltaic installations from 400 to 2,500 per year.

This project is part of the regional strategy for the New Economy and aims to develop the energy sector, which is important for the local economy. On March 12, the Region organized the Renewable Energy Sector Committee meeting at the regional MoCA site. The event brought together stakeholders in the sector to strengthen cooperation and support innovative projects.

In parallel, President Huguette Bello supported the implementation of the national S24 strategy in Reunion Island. Thanks to these two initiatives, the island is reaching approximately 6,000 photovoltaic installations per year. Solar energy is experiencing rapid growth. With 240,000 solar water heaters already installed on rooftops across Réunion, the Regional Council aims for the same target for photovoltaic installations by 2050. This represents approximately 10,000 new installations per year. This plan strengthens energy independence and supports the transition to a more sustainable economy.

Jean-Pierre Chabriat, Regional Councillor for Higher Education, Research, and Energy, emphasizes the sector’s importance to the region. “We want to develop Réunion’s economy. Energy offers opportunities for expertise, employment, and sustainable development,” he states.

The Regional Council is also focusing on training and supporting local businesses to foster this growth. Professionals in the sector benefit from a favorable environment to innovate and create new activities.
