Illegal Businesses in the Crosshairs
50 operations by the Departmental Operational Anti-Fraud Committee (CODAF) have already mobilized state services in Mayotte since the launch of Operation Kingia on April 7th.
Through this campaign, the authorities aim to combat fraud, clean up local economic activity, and better protect consumers. In this context, the prefecture announced on Thursday, May 7th, the administrative closure of several establishments following further inspections. According to the authorities, several serious violations were identified.
The Terminus Bar, located in Dzaoudzi on the Route des Badamiers, is among the businesses sanctioned for undeclared work. Other establishments are closing for failing to comply with hygiene and food safety regulations. These are Brochetterie X Nafisa in Tsingoni, Rendez-vous chez Cousin at the Baobab roundabout in Mamoudzou, and Boulangerie de Combani, also in Tsingoni.
The prefecture reiterates that these inspections aim to enforce regulations, ensure fair competition, and protect consumers. Authorities also wish to support businesses that comply with regulations. For several weeks, these operations have been increasing across the territory. On April 24, several businesses were administratively closed. Three establishments in Pamandzi were notably penalized for undeclared work: Super Bazar, Nourdine Siti-Hykma, and Somany Eléonord.
Several restaurants have also been sanctioned for failing to comply with health standards. These include Le Dékalé in Mtsapéré, Resto Renad in Mamoudzou, Resto plein air in Cavani, and Mamie Sara Resto in Dembéni. Prefectural decrees indicate that these closures are often temporary. Managers must correct any identified deficiencies before reopening. This includes improving hygiene, reviewing food storage practices, and bringing premises up to code.
A further inspection by the relevant authorities will then determine whether businesses can resume operations. Through Operation Kingia, the government aims to restore economic order, improve sanitary conditions, and boost consumer confidence in Mayotte.
