Toamasina: aid from Japan to illuminate the city

Madagascar-Japan Cooperation Reaches New Energy Milestone

Japanese funding of 68 billion ariary (US$15 million) has been granted to Madagascar to improve access to electricity in Toamasina.

The project aims to ensure reliable and secure access to electricity for the population of Toamasina. This will support essential sectors such as health, education, and economic activities. For residents, this improvement will translate into a more comfortable daily life and more efficient services.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Christine Razanamahasoa, reiterated that strengthening energy infrastructure is a priority for the government, under the leadership of the President of the Refoundation of the Republic, Colonel Michael Randrianirina. She commended the continued support of Japan and JICA, which are assisting Madagascar in implementing projects that benefit the population.

The Minister also emphasized her department’s role in mobilizing international funding and technical cooperation to ensure that government priorities are translated into concrete actions.

According to her, this project will not only improve the daily lives of residents but also support the growth of Toamasina and the development of its infrastructure. “The signing of this agreement illustrates the strong and lasting cooperation between Madagascar and Japan and their commitment to the development and well-being of the Malagasy people,” she added.

The signing ceremony was attended by the Minister of Economy and Finance, the Minister of Energy and Hydrocarbons, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs. The Japanese Ambassador and the representative of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) also participated in the event.
